Welcome to Gh Conservatoire College: Department of Drum Set Studies

At our institution, the drum set is celebrated as the engine of rhythm, timekeeping, dynamic control, and artistic expression. Our Department of Drum Set Studies provides a rigorous, multi-genre curriculum with a heavy emphasis on Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Funk, Gospel, World Rhythms, and Contemporary Fusion.

Through a globally benchmarked, 5-tier academic framework—spanning Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.), Master of Music (M.Mus.), and Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.)—our program prepares drummers to excel as world-class performers, session recording artists, rhythm section leaders, and collegiate educators.

Program Philosophy & Educational Pillars

Our drum set curriculum equips students with the technical precision, polyrhythmic independence, listening sensitivity, and stylistic adaptability needed to lead ensembles from behind the kit. Each level balances five core pillars:

  1. Hand/Foot Technique & Rudimental Mastery: Stick control, Moeller technique, pedal mechanics, open-handed playing, and the 40 International Snare Drum Rudiments applied across the drum kit.

  2. Jazz & Afro-Cuban Timekeeping: Mastery of jazz ride-cymbal phrasing, feathering the bass drum, hi-hat independence, brush technique, song structure awareness, and clave-based Afro-Cuban/Brazilian patterns.

  3. Rhythmic Independence & Polyrhythms: 4-way coordination, metric modulation, odd-meter phrasing (5/4, 7/8, 11/8), displacement, and polyrhythmic layering.

  4. Sight-Reading & Chart Interpretation: Rapid reading of drum set charts, big band lead sheets, orchestrating ensemble figures, and click-track/hybrid triggering integration.

  5. Acoustic Engineering & Drum Tech: Tuning mechanics, drumhead selection, room acoustics, microphone placement, electronic drum pad integration, and hybrid kit setup.
