Keyboard

While the piano is a hammer-action, acoustic keyboard instrument focused primarily on touch weight, classical technique, and acoustic dynamics, the Keyboard / Synthesizer & Electronic Workstation program focuses on modern digital performance.

This program centers on sound synthesis, patch design, MIDI control, electronic performance, split/layer mapping, organ drawbar technique, and music technology integration. It prepares keyboardists for modern live bands, touring pop/R&B/Gospel rigs, electronic music production, and sound design. Below is your curriculum framework for the Department of Keyboard Performance, Synthesis & Electronic Music Technology.

Welcome to Gh Conservatoire College: Department of Keyboard Performance & Electronic Music Technology

Our Department of Keyboard Performance & Electronic Music Technology is dedicated to training modern keyboard players, synthesists, sound designers, and electronic music producers.

Unlike traditional acoustic piano study, this program focuses on mastering digital keyboards, synthesizers, tone-wheel organs, workstations, MIDI controllers, and software instruments. Students learn to command live stage rigs, design custom synth patches, execute real-time sound manipulation, and integrate electronic elements into modern live and studio environments.

Through a 5-tier academic framework—spanning Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.), Master of Music (M.Mus.), and Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) / Ph.D.—we shape versatile keyboardists for today's dynamic music industry.

Program Philosophy & Educational Pillars

Our keyboard curriculum merges performance fluency with sound engineering and music technology. Each level balances five core pillars:

  1. Digital Keyboard Technique & Ergonomics: Touch response adaptation (unweighted, semi-weighted, waterfall keys, synth-action), pitch bend/modulation wheel mechanics, expression/sustain pedal control, and dual-manual organ techniques.

  2. Sound Synthesis & Sound Design: Subtractive, FM (Frequency Modulation), Wavetable, Granular, and Sample-based synthesis. Designing custom leads, pads, bass synths, plucks, and atmospheric textures from scratch.

  3. Rig Architecture, Layering & Splits: Multi-keyboard stage setup, split/layer zone programming, mainstage/software instrument integration (MainStage, Ableton Live, Gig Performer), and MIDI routing.

  4. Genre-Specific Stylistic Performance: Hammond B3 organ drawbar/leslie control, Fender Rhodes/Wurlitzer vintage EP playing, synth leads/solo line improvisation, vocoder execution, and pop/gospel/R&B/fusion keyboard voicings.

  5. Electronic Production & Live Technology: MIDI sequencing, hardware/software integration, DAW tracking, automation control, and live electronic loop/sample triggering.
